South Africa statement: Cheslin Kolbe
Double World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe has been ruled out of South Africa’s Twickenham clash against Wales.
Kolbe is sidelined due to a knee issue and will miss the game on June 22.
South Africa then face Ireland in a two-Test series, starting on July 6, with only a possibility at this stage of him being fit for the first encounter in Pretoria.
Kolbe, one of the quickest wings and most lethal finishers in world rugby, was hurt during the Japanese league season at his club side, Tokyo-based Suntory Sungoliath.
“After consultation with the (Springboks) medical team on Sunday, he was released on Monday to seek a specialist opinion,” SA Rugby said.
“Kolbe returned to camp on Wednesday afternoon to follow a rehabilitation programme.
“He will do his rehabilitation under the supervision of the Bok medical staff with an eye on possibly being available for selection for the opening Test against Ireland.”

Wayne Smith gets plenty of plaudits but as AB head coach he was a disaster. Clearly an influential coaching figure nonetheless. Some coaches get such great press while others are continuously criticized, despite their results being as good or even better. The Razz surrounding Razor is popstar level despite him never having any international senior level experience or even worked outside of Christchurch. At test level he is a complete novice.
Go to commentsOver many decades rugby has been ugly at times through one style or another- overuse of kicking, rolling mauls, pick and goes etc but then some team will revive the game with a special plan and rugby will become a joy to watch again. At different times France, Wales, Australia, NZ, Fiji have all fired up viewing pleasure. But SA have always been the same - relentless power and physical brutality - very hard to beat, as in W Cups, but rarely a pleasure to watch from a neutral pov. Unless of course that is your main reason to watch rugby.
