Stormers clinical in bonus-point win over Jaguares

The Stormers came from behind to cruise to a bonus-point 35-8 win over the Jaguares in Super Rugby on Friday.

The South African side claimed a third consecutive victory, but they trailed their conference rivals early on as a superb move saw Bautista Delguy deservedly open the scoring.

However, a group of Jaguares players soon got lost under a high ball and Daniel du Plessis pounced to score, turning the tide of the match.

The sides traded penalties before the break and the Jaguares kept pushing, but Siya Kolisi crossed for the first points of the second half, before Herschel Jantjies dummied through for a third home try.

And it was replacement Justin Phillips who secured the bonus point and wrapped up a comfortable win for the Stormers two minutes from time.

Drop goals are for those that can't score trys. Wilkinson was an average drop kicker compared to Naas Botha, Janie de Beer and Joel Stransky.

But none can compare to Hugo Porta who could drop kick off both feet whenever he felt the urge. He was revered in a soccer mad country sharing equal status with Maradona and the WC winning team of ‘78.

Wilkinson was another pommy media hero who is more myth than substance.

What a frightening prospect that SA can rest Thomas Du Toit and still have a terrifying front row without him.

I think this is potentially the strongest squad Rassie has ever had to work with but that forward pack is just formidable.

Thomas Du Toit has been brilliant at Bath.

JvG prefers to pair Beno Obano at loosehead, with TdT at tighthead as his 1st choice options but has quite a lot of flexibility with Van Wyk & TdT as alternative options at loosehead, with Will Stuart, Archie Griffin & Billy Sela at tighthead.

I think TdT was the best prop in the Premiership last season and has certainly improved the other players around him since he has joined the club.

The feat Owen Farrell achieved with Lions series that no man has in pro era

As an Aussie, I don’t get the anti-Farrell vibe always coming out of England. His team mates at every level speak glowingly about what he brings to a squad. That said, England certainly need to be getting both Smiths some game time in the 10 jumper once the Lions Tour is over. Doesn’t mean Ford and Farrell are history. Performance is the key regardless of age. That said, Ford is 18 months younger than Owen F and on current form, would be an excellent ‘wise head’ as part of an England squad to Australia in two years time.

For most of us in the Southern Hemisphere, we didn’t crave a Lions win in Game 2. We wanted the game to go to a decider to make it more exciting and give Australian rugby the boost it desperately craves and needs.

Owen was a great player but I do feel his International time has passed. England really struggled after he left but now we have the Smith’s, who need games at 10 and we have a few options coming through at 12 & 13 (I think Marchant will be on his way back), we don’t need Owen and his return would slow down the progress of the youngsters.

It’s a tricky balance but I do fear that Borthwick over values experience and why he would likely play him at the expense of the pathway.

Will be really interesting to see how this shakes out in the Autumn when they pick the next squads.

Appetite is one thing, legs to make it to 2027 are another. Playing in a one off series has a point but can you see him being in the line up in 2 years? The Smith's will be wiser and better equipped. Ford still has the nouse at 10. At 12 there is a flood of younger players shown on tour and some guy called Ollie Laurance to come back. If so why does Borthwick invest match minutes into him.
