Stormers ease past Lions to return to winning ways

Stormers ended a four-game winless run by beating the Lions 29-10 in the United Rugby Championship.

Carbon-copy tries from Joseph Dweba, powering over from two mauls, and a smart Suleiman Hartzenberg finish gave the hosts a 15-0 interval lead in Cape Town.

Lions wing Edwill van der Merwe and replacement hooker Franco Marais crossed after the break, but Stormers secured a bonus point through Leolin Zas before Neethling Fouche added a fifth try, with Manie Libbok landing two conversions.

Re Gary Ringrose, he may already have denied himself the opportunity with his selfless act. That’s two concussive episodes in a short space of time. If he takes to the field for the 3rd test then what is the point of player safety.

Better than 71 and 74 Lions. Sorry no ways. Remember where Aus is at the moment. Not exactly up there. Struggled to beat minnow teams. No ways this bunch of Liobs are the greatest ever, not by a long shot. 97 and 2013 better than this lot.

Top observation. It does seem that much of Joe’s selections were still focused on the future, not necessarily on the immediate tour win. For example, there were other more experienced wing and 10 options but decided to blood those players as well. No JOC either who could have helped close out that match.


And even with a focus on the future, they pushed the BILs to nearly evening the series.

Love them. We can do without penalty goals but keep the drop kick.


You also only need to get it right once. Wilkinson’s is iconic but he missed three before he nailed the one that counted.
