Leicester’s Tom Youngs has been banned for four weeks after being cited for punching/striking Wasps’ Will Rowlands last Saturday at Welford Road.

Called to account before an independent disciplinary panel on Tuesday evening, Youngs accepted the charge and was given a ban that won’t allow him to play again until March 24.

Independent panel chair Jeremy Summers said: “The player may have been reacting to an unintended contact with his body but the reaction was nevertheless uncalled for. The player accepted that it was one which let down the game.

“He has two previous matters on record from 2016 and 2019 and as such he was not eligible to receive full mitigation. A suspension of four weeks was therefore imposed.

"The dates of suspension take into account a free weekend for Leicester Tigers on March 14/15.”

Youngs was cited by independent match commissioner Andy Blyth for the incident that took place in the 53rd minute of the league encounter against Tigers’ midlands rivals, Wasps.

Leicester full-back Telusa Veainu was the star of a dour 18-9 victory. With the game in the balance, the Tongan capitalised on poor handling from the visitors to run 90 metres and complete a miserable week for Wasps, during which Dai Young stood down after nine years at the helm as director of rugby.
