Twitter reacts to another sensational Japan performance

Twitter was for full of praise for Japan following their sensational 28-21 defeat of Scotland in Yokohama.

The Brave Blossoms secured their place in the World Cup quarter finals in style, delivering a high-intensity performance and scoring four tries against Scotland.

It was the second Tier 1 scalp Japan have taken in the tournament, following their second round defeat of Ireland.

The result saw Japan top Pool A and sets them up for a quarter-final meeting with South-Africa, who they famously beat at the 2015 World Cup, in Tokyo next Sunday.

Disallowed tries and held ups over the line were the only thing stopping three cricket scores (ABs fault for not executing) - stats show how dominant ABs were across the three games.

The only moral victory was that your young team matched us physically but otherwise, it was a humbling tour.

Agree. JGP was crazy good as is the norm and somehow didn't get player of the match. Russell seems to be hitting a late career peak and both had an absolute arm chair ride from their pack.

Other test teams would have put them to the sword with a statement win.

The NH press is funny. They called the series last year as boys against men so they have to bang on about a heroic, one sided thumping. Not even competitive.

It was 27-19 and the Lions never kicked on from a 24-5 advantage. Very unlike a Farrell coached squad.

Have France made New Zealand's forthright pundits come over all sheepish?

Despite the strength of the Top 14, France have not won a single RWC, yet they have 500 000 more registered players than NZ. To consistently be the best, you need to play your best 23 as often as possible, something the French are incapable of doing when their domestic comp overlaps the June/July test schedule. You don't need 3rd and 4th tier depth to win test matches, you need your to field your best players and develop combinations. New players excel when they are blooded in the top side. I find it incredible that SA, AUS and NZ have won 9 of the 10 RWCs between them, despite the unlimited, undisputed wealth, resources and power of NH rugby.

If you dominate your opponent, who hasn't played particularly well and were living off scraps, but only take the game by 8 PTS what does that say?

Why aren't their scores sticking? Hasn't that been a theme all tour.

A game is always on the bread and butter. Lions were 3/7 on their tries, Wallabies 3/4 with an angry fist waved at the officials.

On the balance the Wallabies had the drop on the lions scrum. They’ve the enforcers next week to make it stick.

The narrative was already written by the media before this tour started yet 24-5 up inside 45 mins should have equalled a rollicking. It never came.

I'm blissfully aware of how the “versatility” argument goes. However, like I had said earlier, it's an excuse tp keep players who can’t secure a portfolio in any given position.

It's akin to a player is good at a few roles but specialists in none.

Cricket is notorious for using “all-rounders” tag to retain players specifically chosen to bat or bowl.

For that matter, coaches also use “injuries” to rest players while experimenting another. Was B Barrett injured with strapped hand?

Who polices or checks that? I do agree that Razor needed to put Dmac through that “test match” spin-dry cycle to see how he would fare. For me, he didn't do enough to warrant a start against top-tier 1st XVs.

The British & Irish Lions are historic in name, but losers by nature

What a horrible headline and thing to say anywhere. I know when they come to NZ it is massive for us. Not just because of the dollars (but with ours being so weak and their rugby being a slightly elite sport, thats massive for us as well). To be fair most Rugby teams have the same percentage of win/losses with us and the Bokke. So what?

Interesting test match, boy are Russell and to a lesser extent Lowe a threat. I thought he must have been done after getting shunned for the last Lions series but he should he’s still a master at work. Has his ball playing game got better since then?

Tremendous effort in application and skill from the Wallabies, no where near their opponents on the latter though, that team could rival the 2015 All Black class.

Wallaby 12 was everywhere last night, huge effort, but a lot of the time that included being in the wrong place. Is their partnership just too complicated or can they make it work better in test 2 and 3? I have a feeling JAS should shift inside to 12 to help simplify things.

Against such a dominant team it would ensure he gets a more appropriate amount of time on the ball as well. Oh, and BTW, you could see the raw naivety of a league player out there (as you’d expect) but it didn’t have too much of a negative effect. Unfortunately the different picture he brings with ball in hand also didn’t have too much of a positive effect.

Yes, there was a feeling of being put off I recall by how ugly it was getting right, and that must be because he was an early get. It’d be really interesting to know which would have had the bigger factor in their raid failing them, the carry on and lack of performance from Eddie or having created a money vacuum all of a sudden.

Nah, you can massage “stats” to suit your narrative. Fact in the field against France C, again, last night —Dmac was isolated and dispossessed a few times.

He's just not good enough when top-tier footy will kick in. If B Barrett is injured — and he should retire soon like ALB — who will be a first-choice pivot? That's reality, not insignificant stats to suit an argument.

Finn would be better at manipulating space I’d say, which is against Rush Ds, actually still saw it a bit this game where he ran at the gap and the outside pushed too hard allowing the backdoor pass or offload.
