URC: Late drama in Cape Town as Stormers see off Sharks

Stormers survived two late yellow cards to strengthen their hold on second spot in the United Rugby Championship with a 29-23 victory over Sharks.

Clayton Blommetjies (2), Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Ben-Jason Dixon scored tries as Stormers recorded an 18th consecutive home league win in Cape Town.

Stormers led 19-6 at the break and secured a bonus point 15 minutes into the second half through Blommetjies’ second try.

Sharks looked dead and buried but surged back as Yaw Penxe and Rohan Janse van Rensburg touched down and Grant Williams scored a superb solo try.

Stormers played the final seven minutes with 13 men as wing Seabelo Senatla joined prop Sazi Sandi in the sin bin.

But Stormers held on and Manie Libbok, the competition’s top scorer, added a penalty with the final kick of the match.

Which they deployed because France were conceding penalties in midfield rather than allow the ball to get to the backs division. England used the resulting kicks in the most efficient way to accumulate points. If teams don’t want them to do that, they shouldn’t give away penalties in places where a kick to the corner is on.

As Martin Johnson once quipped when asked why 2003 England Men kicked so many penalties, “you’d have to ask the other side. It’s not us giving away the penalties.”

World Rugby to launch 'next phase' of player welfare technology

They are calibrated to record head accelerations over the level that is associated with potential concussion. That generally doesn’t happen unless there’s direct contact to the head or a “whiplash” type contact in which the contact itself is OK but the player may not have had their neck properly braced for impact or their head hit the turf at speed.

The mouthguards have been in use for long enough that the calibration is well established, and the trials of the latest version will have checked for false positives.

The gloves are now off and the Boks for the first time are revealing their top players. At home at Ellis park they should comfortably dispose of an already battered Aissie side by 20+. Most interest will be to see what injuries will affect both teams thereafter

rugbypass have it as their leading womens rugby headline- so clearly they want it to be taken seriously-they even asked woodman for comment. I have merely been pointing out that the rationale for some of the choices do not make much sense. The main point simply is shes only just come back to 15s after 3 years away-she hasnt yet done enough to justify the worlds best 15s player tag. Maybe she will in the months to come,but not now.

Yes it’s so interesting at the moment, four strong teams for the RC. My team is rising again I think, but so much quality opposition means a lot of tight games and many world class players spread around the teams. I think Southern hemisphere rugby is very strong again, the series in SA next year will be awesome. Better or at least equal to RWC to me, 1996 was the most epic rugby.

That NZ squad was insane. I think teams learnt lessons from what happened to NZ in 2007. I think things will start to narrow in terms of team selections by 2026. Injuries and red cards etc will play a significant role as it already has with the Boks no.8 stocks. It’s a fascinating time in Union, that 2007 AB squad would have been primed for the current attrition rate.
