Former England captain Martin Johnson has come under some criticism from Welsh fans over his latest comments regarding the Grand Slam winning team.

According to WalesOnline, Johnson said that if the Six Nations were played again, it would probably be a different result, suggesting a few results could have gone the other way throughout the Championship.

Looking ahead to the World Cup in Japan later this year, Johnson wrote off Wales’ chances of lifting the Webb Ellis Cup. This is because it will be on neutral ground, and they will not have the advantage of playing at the Principality Stadium, where they hosted both England and Ireland this year. Johnson believes that playing at home is such an advantage to Wales due to the atmosphere it creates, and they will not be as successful away from home.

However, many fans have said that this is sour grapes from the former coach, saying that this is completely hypothetical. Indeed, many Welsh fans highlighted England’s World Cup win in 2003, saying that Johnson’s team were fortuitous at times, and had the tournament been played again, the result may have been different too. England’s quarter-final against Wales, where the Welsh were leading at half time, was brought up as well. This is what the fans have said:

Despite Johnson’s comments, many Welsh fans seem confident going into the World Cup in September. While the Principality Stadium in undeniably a huge help, they did not play every one of their 14-match streak at home, and they have found a way to win in some tricky situations.

Johnson has clearly not ingratiated himself with the Welsh fans with these comments, but ultimately, the fans have said that they would rather be in the position that they are in currently, than any other side in the Six Nations.
