Warburton not guaranteed starting spot - Gatland

Sam Warburton may be tour captain for the British and Irish Lions in New Zealand but that does not mean he is guaranteed a place in the first Test, says Warren Gatland.

The Wales flanker has struggled for fitness in the opening weeks of the tour and played in only two of their five warm-up matches.

An ankle problem has hampered his time on the field but he played 67 minutes in the narrow 23-22 defeat to the Highlanders in Dunedin.

Warburton continued his recovery with 17 minutes against the Maori All Blacks – as a replacement for Peter O’Mahony – but Gatland says the make-up of his back-row for next weekend’s opening Test is still up for debate.

“For Sam, we were hoping he was going to be part of the 23 against the Crusaders,” Gatland was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

“Unfortunately, he rolled his ankle a little bit so hadn’t recovered in time.

“So he had time against the Highlanders and we were able to give him time last night.

“There will be some tough debates and discussions to have on the final make-up of what the back-row is going to be for Saturday.”

Eight All Blacks released to play opening round of NPC

They should be releasing all of them back to the NPC. Most of them seem to pick up more injuries during training than actually playing matches anyway. When did NZ become so scared of injuries that out comes the cottonwool the moment the NPC comes into view. If anything, injuries to established players have been a blessing in disguise in recent years, finally giving young players a chance to shine where veterans have been skating by on reputation and test cap numbers.

So, these 8 are the outer-fringe players who will probably hardly see any rugby in black for the rest of the season or are about to be replaced by returning players.

Meanwhile, some like Billy Proctor, if selected for the nest Test won’t have played for 5-6 weeks at all. And then if they look rusty (which they will be) it’ll be those not in the protected ‘leadership group’ that will pay the selection price if things turn pear shaped.

Would be great to have Crusaders prop, Tamaiti Williams back for when they face South Africa. He has had a huge year for the Crusaders. One of the best props around. He has years ahead of him too.

But you know that’s not the case.

If they were the top side of course, yes, but my point was that they rotate with the Lions. As in I don’t think it’s NZRs or anyones choice. Like Dans saying, if it was choice they would probably choose someone else that would be more marketable (a country who’s fans would be interested in it), but also that if it was the France side that toured, they may be playing Aus or SA instead. Can’t recall who we had in 2021.

Probably good news for U20 halfback Dylan Pledger.
