Wasps give Thomas Young the all-clear

Thomas Young has been given the all-clear

In a brief statement Wasps have confirmed that their flanker Thomas Young has been given a clean bill of health and released from hospital in Ireland.

Following an injury sustained in yesterday’s Heineken Champions Cup game against Munster, the Wales international back-rower spent the night at University Hospital Limerick.

The injury was sustained in an apparent clash of heads at a breakdown close to the home side's line after which the contest was delayed by ten minutes while Young received treatment.

The Coventry-based Gallagher Premiership side's statement said: "After a series of scans last night and this morning Thomas has now been discharged from hospital and will therefore be able to fly home with the Club’s Head of Medical Services later today.

"We would like to thank all at Munster Rugby and University Hospital Limerick for their care and support, as well as those within the rugby community who have reached out."

Young will leave Wasps at the end of the season to rejoin Cardiff and in the process make himself eligible for Wales selection.

This move will also see him reconnect with his father Dai whose second stint as director of rugby at the Arms Park began in 2020.

In Young's absence Wasps suffered a 45-7 defeat at the hands of a Munster side which according to black-and-gold boss Lee Blackett proved too physical for his injury-ravaged team.

“I thought it was probably a step back from where we’d been the last few weeks in wins over Leicester and Toulouse," he said.

“I just thought physically we lost our battle. I know I spoke a little bit before the game about probably a couple of carriers down from last week, and knew we had to be physical.

“We had a game-plan, we tried to play a little bit wider this week, but you’ve got to at least win mainline to get that and I thought we lost that battle.

“Then we’re trying to force things off the back foot, as a result. At times our skill level probably let us down as well. It’s hard to play once you’re on the back foot it’s about getting that go forward ball.”
