Watch: New Zealand prodigy Oli Mathis scores bizarre try after referee dropped

New Zealand’s latest prodigy 19-year-old Oli Mathis, who made his debut for the All Blacks Sevens in Dubai last week, showed off an unconventional move to beat France for a try in Cape Town.

The hybrid flanker-wing from Waikato scored one of the most bizarre tries in recent memory after the referee was fended off by Ngarohi McGarvey-Black, unintentionally.

The referee copped a stiff arm to the chest, dropping to his knees before bouncing back to his feet bravely. After beating the man with the whistle, McGarvey-Black spun a long ball to Mathis on the left edge who bamboozled the defence after slipping over.

Mathis put on the brakes but fell over, which somehow caused France’s defender to also fall over, before Mathis lept up to scoot down the sideline for the try.

The bizarre try came as New Zealand tried to mount a comeback late against France in the pool stages in Cape Town.

It was Mathis’ second try on the circuit after crossing the chalk last weekend in Spain for his first SVNS try.

The Hurricanes could easily be the most dangerous team come semi final game, a very even game without many of their best either performing or playing, and they should have one that game if not for some brain dead substitutions from Laidlaw and a freak opportunistic try by O’Connor.


While the two Canes midfields started the season pretty rusty, and I thought in Sullivan’s case especially, well out of form, they have started playing very well together as Peter suggested on TV last night. Still though, their is some class to come back, and if Roigard can sort out his game and actually provide some impact, and Laidlaw can get things right at 10, well that’s a very dangerous side if that front row start getting into gear. Dissapointed Kirifi didn’t quite bring the big game like Lakai did. Missing players like Rayasi and Moorby from last year for sure.

Yes all for the sake of progress though. They were willing to take the risk but they likely underestimated the Tahs.


There was talk Dmac might take his sabatical next year, so MacMillan wouldn’t want to leave the club in the lurch without a proven/developed first five.

LOL what? The Canes were poor last night, Roigard was directionless compared to Hotham, and Laidlaw blew the win with his substitutions.


Large parts of the Saders game was great though yeah, the tight work led by Barrett and those two young halves were brilliant.

I honesty believe that Damien McKenzie should not have had a position change and replaced by another. My reason: Replacing one of the top All Black world class player against a newcomer at this stage in Super Rugby is a no brainer. Okay, his kicking may need to be improved on but he is a high profile player. What a huge mistake. 😔

Once again it has been shown that no team in this competition is unbeatable. Well done the Waratahs who showed the flair and guts to upset an off colour Chiefs outfit. DMac possibly had his worst performance for a long time. Crusaders now have their nose in front but their return matches against the Blues & Chiefs ( both in Ch Ch ) will likely determine the eventual winner of the round Robin. Not beyond the bounds of possibility that an Aussie team could emerge as the overall winner.

Taha Kemara has stepped up big time this year at 10 for the Crusaders. Putting the ball behind the opposition. I would have liked James O’Connor longer in the saddle ed he looked sharp, scoring a brilliant try. Rivez Reihana deserves a go too. Unlike last year , the Crusaders have options.

I would suggest that Jack Crowley is a better option than Marcus Smith as an outhalf who can play elsewhere. He’s a more rounded outhalf than Sam Prendergast in fact, but everyone has been carried away in Ireland because they don't, or refuse, to see the armchair ride Prendergast gets behind the Leinster pack. France was not a blip. It exposed deficiencies in Prendergast’s game.
