'When we cross the line into personal insults, the fun is gone'

Retired Ireland prop Marcus Horan has cried foul over the level of social media abuse attacking Simon Easterby’s team following last Saturday’s Guinness Six Nations trouncing by France in Dublin.

Looking to take a major step towards winning an unprecedented hat-trick of championship titles and a second Grand Slam in three seasons, the Irish were blown away by a second-half French barrage and two late consolation tries were needed to massage the damaging 27-42 margin of defeat.

The loss ignited a furious online reaction and Horan, an Irish Grand Slam winner in 2009, has taken issue with the personalised nature of the comments.

Erasmus explains why young players should ply their trade locally

Writing on LinkedIn, the 67-cap former loosehead said: “After the disappointment of the weekend’s Six Nations game against France, the level of abuse of players has put the game into perspective.

“It’s only a game. A game played by people who carry the disappointment a lot longer than us.

“We are all entitled to opinions, and part of the whole experience is to critique the game with friends and family. But when we cross the line into personal insults, the fun is gone.

“From an Irish perspective, we have over achieved for a small country that has a grá [love] for all sports. Relish the good times and back our athletes when they need us the most.”

Last Saturday’s loss resulted in Ireland falling from pole position to third on the table behind France and England heading into this Saturday’s final round of matches.

The Irish will retake first place with a win away to Italy in the first of the round five fixtures, but the expectation is for them to then be overtaken later in the day with the English visiting Wales in Cardiff and the French hosting Scotland in Paris.

So even Irish players are now complaining about Irish fans.

From a South African’s point of view: Ireland is still a force to be reckoned with. They had a bad day, and that happens. I am sure our Boks can sympathize with them. Bok fans are also extremely hard on them.

    Try being an England fan.

Weve had more ups & downs since 2003 than a fiddlers elbow, and tbh it’s been mostly downs.

true, and no fan base rubbish their own side quite like the disgruntled English supporters!

The Reds' 'whimpering' exit shows Super Rugby scrums still matter

The Scrum remains a key platform in the game. There may be fewer set in SR Pacific and fewer penalties given but you cannot escape its importance and that is how it should be. The scrum cannot become an irrelevant thing in Rugby. It deserves its own space in the game however too much time is spent setting a scrum and thats where the refs need to be more strict. They need to demand effort from players and award 10metres or penalties if the scrums are not set fast enough by one team or the other. The sixty seconds to set will only help if its enforced strictly. The Refs in the Top 14, URC, Champs Cup and Prem have been too slack in adequately policing the times setting scrums. Too many teams simply dawdle at scrum time because they are on the back foot. Theres nothing more frustrating than watching a clock count down and players having a chat with the ref at scrum time or stand up because they packed in badly. Refs need to get serious on it. In 1995 scrums were set in seconds. The laws came in to make them safer but now its way too time consuming. I feel like too often refereeing is done according to feeling and not mandate. There needs to be consistent standards across the game. While SR referees will penalise a 9 for not using it in the 5 seconds it rarely happens in Europe. Andrew Brace did it this weekend to Embrose Papier but that was after like 10 seconds. The Refs need to get more assertive about time wasting and following the time limit guidelines and this needs to happen across all leagues at once. Only then will we have a game for all refereed at the same standard.
