Worcester Warriors sign Lions prop Sutherland

Scotland prop Rory Sutherland will join Gallagher Premiership club Worcester after the British and Irish Lions’ South Africa tour.

Sutherland becomes the second Lions squad member to sign for Worcester ahead of next season, following his Scotland team-mate Duhan van der Merwe.

The 28-year-old, who has won 16 caps, will head to Sixways from Edinburgh later this summer, the Warriors announced.

Jim Hamilton sits down with Vitality ambassador and former teammate Maro Itoje before he jets off to South Africa for the British & Irish Lions Series.
The Saracens lock told us all about Saracens rugby club and the defining effect it has had on his rugby career.

Worcester rugby director Alan Solomons was in charge at Edinburgh when Sutherland joined them from Gala in 2015.

“It is fantastic news for the club that Rory is joining us at Sixways,” Solomons said.

“He is a terrific rugby player – a big, powerful, abrasive, scrummaging loosehead who really puts himself about.”

Sutherland added: “I have spoken to many Premiership players over the years and they always talked about how attritional the league is.

“I knew one day that I wanted to come and sample it for myself. I want to help Worcester become a top side.

“The goals the coaches discussed with me are very much aligned with my own.”

Sutherland and Van der Merwe apart, Worcester have also recruited the likes of England international scrum-half Willi Heinz from Gloucester and Harlequins’ former Wales hooker Scott Baldwin for next term.

This has to be one of the most stupid ideas I've ever heard in rugby. Who on earth thought it up must be making some dosh out of it! The Lions’ tours themselves are pretty daft themselves these days anyway, unlike, say, the 1974 tour of SA that I thoroughly enjoyed because the Lions who I supported then, thrashed the Boks, who I now support, and took about three months! These recent ones are a joke they are so short and really weird when you think about it.

To be fair they wouldn't have even looked at it if Tizzano hadn't dived. So I don't think he ruined the chance for the penalty, if anything he slightly increased the chances of a penalty but I'm sure as you've implied the ref’s eye was drawn to the silly dive and he didn't give much thought to the potential going off feet.

Do you really think there would be appetite for that and to the extent it would generate an inbound following into the tens of thousands, coz I’m not convinced it would draw huge crowds in the NH. Definitely not in France and that starts to really limit the opportunity pretty quickly…

There is a massive contingent of South Africans staying in both NZ and Australia. A lot of inter marriages with those 3 countries as well. Trust me, there is enough to tie them all together. I do agree about the island nations though. Those athletes are really very special specimen.

I’m looking at it frame by frame right now: Tizzano already has a hand on Gleeson’s left shoulder as the tackle is completed. His bum is east-west. He is straddling Ryan. He makes a play at the ball in this position, then raises up (without departing the tackle scene) and pivots to a better position.

Gleeson has already tackled Ryan and Tizzano is obliged to retire in order to enter through the gate. At no point does he attempt to do it. His right foot is always ahead of the ball.

The fact that there was no HIA and Schmidt and the WBs were actively considering Tizzano for selection this week tells the real story.

Either the injury was as severe as they suggested but they decided to ignore the welfare of the player anyway; or else. the severity of the injury was magnified out of all proportion.

Direction of the try line = Through the gate

Just different terminology for the same thing

Tizzano attacks the ball from a side entry position with no attempt to come through the gate or from the direction of his tryline (take your pick)

This whole no ruck arguement does my head in, just shows how little people understand the laws

THE ONLY REASON that Morgan is hitting above the shoulder line is because Tizzano is already there first, to contest the ball. Ironically, if they both arrived at the same time and dropped their body height together they could have knocked each other out with a head clash.

None of this is on either player. I don’t for a second think that Morgan is a dirty player or that Tizzano is a chancer who would be that cynical as to milk it.

It’s a failure of officiating. Collectively. Head contact is a penalty. He even states on his mic there is head contact!

Piardi goes straight to the TMO and says both players have arrived at the same time. They haven’t. If he asks the wrong questions he’ll always get the wrong answer.
