Bio
Bismarck du Plessis is a hard-hitting legend of South African rugby who is one of the greatest hookers to ever play the game. An electric talent, he was capped 79 times by the Springboks and made more than 100 appearances for Montpellier and the Sharks during his career.
Born in South Africa on 22 May 1984, Bismarck du Plessis began his professional rugby-playing career in 2003, when he first appeared for the Free State Cheetahs. However, after only making two appearances for the side, he moved to the Sharks in 2005. Then, between 2005 and 2015, he represented the Sharks in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby, making 131 appearances for the Super Rugby side in the process.
However, at the end of the 2015 season, Bismarck du Plessis left South African rugby and moved to France. In doing so, he signed for Montpellier in the French Top 14. Between his signing in 2015 and his retirement in 2021, he made 108 appearances for the side, capturing the European Rugby Challenge Cup twice.
However, even though he enjoyed a highly distinguished domestic career, Bismarck du Plessis is undoubtedly best known for his international career with the Springboks. Between 2007 and 2015, he represented South Africa 79 times and featured in three Rugby World Cups.
In 2021, Bismarck du Plessis called an end to his rugby-playing career. Since, he has been exploring several business opportunities and interests, including an international wine brand.
