Courtney Lawes Bio

Courtney Lawes is a giant of English rugby. Formerly an ever-present for both Northampton Saints and England, today he plays his domestic rugby for Brive in France

Born on 23 February 1989, Courtney Lawes has been a standout star since his playing days began. He represented England at the under 18 level and made his first team debut for Northampton Saints in the 2007-08 season.

Courtney Lawes quickly gained a reputation for himself as a hard tackler who played rugby at a high intensity. In fact, this style of play was to prove crucial for his club career. In 2014, he was instrumental in helping Northampton Saints win both the Premiership and the European Rugby Challenge Cup. He then won the Premiership once more in 2024, in his final season with the club. Since, he’s represented Brive in France.

Although he’s enjoyed a stellar domestic career, Courtney Lawes is best known for his performances for England, who he represented more than 100 times before his international retirement in 2023.

During his international career, he won the Six Nations Championship three times and was a vital player for England at the 2019 Rugby World Cup; particularly in their famous victory over New Zealand in the semi-final.

On top of this, because of his outstanding play for Northampton and England, he was selected for the British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand in 2017. During the tour, he played in two tests as the Lions earned a historic draw. In 2021, it was also announced that Courtney Lawes had been included in the British and Irish Lions squad for their tour of South Africa. He played in all three tests as the Lions lost a closely-contested series 2-1.

With several years of top-flight rugby still ahead of him, we can't wait to see what else Courtney Lawes can achieve in the game.
