Bio

Lukhanyo Am is a South African rugby union player who represents the Springboks and the Sharks. Capable of playing as both a centre and a wing, he’s a formidable opponent and he won the Rugby World Cup with South Africa in both 2019 and 2023.

Born 28 November 1993, Lukhanyo Am played for the Margate-based Gladiators Rugby Academy before he was called into the Border Bulldogs U19 squad.

After spending time with Saracens during the South African off-season, he returned to be included in the Border Bulldogs senior squad for the 2013 Vodacom Cup competition. He then made his senior debut later that season.

Since, he’s made appearances for a number of South Africa’s top sides, including the Border Bulldogs, the Falcons, the Southern Kings and the Sharks. He also enjoyed a brief sabbatical in Japan in 2022, where he represented the Kobelco Kobe Steelers. In 2024, while representing the Sharks, he won both the EPCR Challenge Cup and the Currie Cup

Undoubtedly a force on the domestic stage, Lukhanyo Am has saved his best performances for the Springboks. First capped in 2017, he’s since made more than 30 appearances for the national side and has won back-to-back Rugby World Cups (2019 and 2023).

Added to this, he also played in all three tests as South Africa defeated the touring British and Irish Lions in 2023 and he won The Rugby Championship with the Springboks in 2024.

Still playing his best rugby, we can’t wait to see what else Lukhanyo Am can achieve.
