Morne Steyn

Morné Steyn is a South African fly-half who is renowned for his exceptional goal kicking abilities. Although now in the twilight of his career, he's still a regular starter for South African side the Bulls and to date has a number of impressive accolades and personal achievements in the game to his name.

Born in Cradock, Eastern Cape, South Africa in July 1984, Morné Steyn played rugby union as a youth before joining the Bulls in 2003 after leaving school. Here he would play for both the provincial side in the Currie Cup and in the Super Rugby championship. His Super Rugby debut came in 2005 and he made an immediate impact on the side, earning a nomination for its 'Young Player of the Year' in his first season.

He would remain with the Bulls until 2013 and across this period he would enjoy Super Rugby championship wins in 2007, 2008 and 2010, as well as three Currie Cup wins. Morné Steyn even finished as the top point scorer in the league in 2009 and 2010.

He left the side in 2013 and joined up with Stade Français where he played in the Top 14. His prolific point scoring continued with the French club and helped them to a Top 14 title in 2015 and a European Rugby Challenge Cup win in 2017. After over 130 appearances, Morné Steyn left Stade Français in 2020 and re-joined the Bulls, where he is still playing as of 2022.

Morné Steyn made his famous international debut in 2009. Coming off the bench to play against the British & Irish Lions, he would go on to kick the winning penalty to give the Springboks a series win. Morné Steyn's other notable happenings for South Africa include him scoring all 31 points to win a match against New Zealand during the Tri Nations Series of 2009, finishing top point scorer (62) in the 2011 Rugby World Cup and being the fastest player in history to score a total of 700 points for the Springboks.

His final game for South Africa was in 2021 against the British & Irish Lions in Durban. This took his tally to 68 caps and an astonishing 742 points scored for the Springboks.

Outside of the game, Morné Steyn is good friends with South African golfers Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen, he also puts his longevity and athleticism down to his abilities as a gymnast.
