Argentina Rugby Team

As well as being one of South America's top sides, the Argentina Rugby team are also ranked amongst the world's best on the international stage. Known by their fans as 'Los Pumas' the team competes annually in The Rugby Championship and they've also featured in every Rugby World Cup to date.

On this page you can find out more about the Argentina Rugby team including their long history and further information about their past and present squads. There's also all of the Argentina Rugby team's latest fixtures and results.

Rugby union itself was first played back in the mid 19th century in Argentina, but it was several decades later in 1910 that their first international game was played. This was against a touring British Isles team which Argentina ultimately lost 28-3.

However, as the years progressed so did the Argentine team, who began to establish themselves as a dominant force in South American rugby. This included many titles in the South American tournament (now the South American Four Nations) as well as various successful global tours which charted their rise to top tier status.

Fast forward to the present and the Argentina Rugby team are ranked among the best in the world with a 50.44% win record in their test match history. While their progress is currently rather slow in The Rugby Championship, with just five wins since 2012, arguably Argentina's best honour is their third place finish in the 2007 Rugby World Cup. This is a feat they're yet to surpass and despite qualifying for all competitions pre and post 2007, the closest the team has come to this is a fourth place finish in 2015.

The Argentina Rugby team has also seen its fair share of legendary players don the light blue and white striped jersey. This includes record breakers like hooker and former Argentina captain Agustín Creevy - who currently has the most international matches under his belt. There's also leading try scorer José María Núñez Piossek and popular fly-half Nicolás Sánchez who are just a few more greats to have also graced the field for the Pumas.

The current Argentina Rugby squad is also strong and features many players who ply their rugby union trade in the European domestic leagues. This includes Leicester Tigers hooker Julián Montoya, Argentina captain and Stade Français back row Pablo Matera and Bordeaux lock Guido Petti.
