The Bordeaux Rugby Club was formed when two local sides merged to create a stronger team that could represent Bordeaux on the national stage. Although supporters of both Stade Bordelais and CA Bordeaux-Bègles-Gironde opposed the merger, the plan went through with the support of local businesses and former players. As a result, the new team took the place of the Stade Bordelais in the Pro D2. However, due to conflicts between the two merging sides, the team was initially called Union Stade Bordelais-C.A.Bordeaux-Bègles Gironde. Thankfully, in 2008, the club's name was shortened to Union Bordeaux Bègles. That said, most rugby fans refer to the team as Bordeaux Rugby.
Although the team struggled for continuity in its early years, it did not take long before the side gained promotion from the Pro D2. In only their 6th season in the competition, Bordeaux Rugby finished fifth in the table and qualified for the play-offs. They then went on to beat Grenoble in the semi-finals and SC Albi in the final to secure promotion to the Top 14.
Between 2011 and 2015, the Bordeaux Rugby side solidified their place in the Top 14, regularly finishing mid-table. In 2015, the side finally made the leap forward and finished 7th. In doing so, they qualified for the play-offs for the European Rugby Champions Cup. In the play-offs, they beat Gloucester 22-23 in a tense final. This meant that they qualified for the European Rugby Champions Cup for the first time ever.
Since the 2015 season, Bordeaux Rugby have appeared in every edition of the Top 14. In the 2019-20 season, the side was even top of the table after 17 match days. However, sadly, the season was cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The team has also been moderately successful in Europe. They have competed in the European Rugby Champions Cup on several occasions and reached the semi-finals of the European Rugby Challenge Cup in 2019-20.
Although Bordeaux are a young side, they're definitely a team on the up and they've made significant waves in French rugby since their arrival on the scene in 2006. Who knows what the future holds for this up-and-coming side.
