Union Sportive Montalbanaise
Union Sportive Montalbanaise, typically referred to as US Montauban by rugby fans, is a French rugby union team that competes in the Pro D2, the second tier of the French professional league system.
The club, which was founded in 1903, made its first championship appearance in 1910. They claimed their first championship in 1967, after defeating CA Bègles 11-3.
Since then, the club remained relatively quiet until 2001, when the side claimed victory against Toulon in the Pro D2 finals. The mid 2000s offered further success for the club who were promoted to the Top 14 after winning the 2005-06 Pro D2 season.
The team then played solidly during the 2006-07 Top 14 season, defeating Narbonne 41-20 in the first match of the season and handing Stade Français their first defeat. They completed the season in a respectable seventh place.
The side competed in the 2008-09 European Rugby Champions Cup but unfortunately didn’t make it past the pool stage.
In April 2010, the club was relegated from the Top 14 to the Pro D2 after breaking budget rules. Later that month, they filed for bankruptcy. However, in 2014 they won the Fédérale 1 and were promoted back to the Pro D2 for the 2014-15 season.
US Montauban has shown promise with some solid performances and victories over the years and we look forward to seeing what’s in store for the club in the near future.
