Wasps Rugby hold the distinction as the first team to ever win a professional rugby league in England. This is because they won the Courage League Division 1 (now the Premiership) in the 1996-97 season, which was the first professional rugby season in English rugby union history.
Wasps FC was formed back in 1867 after Hampstead Football Club split into Harlequins Rugby and Wasps Rugby. In 1871, Wasps Rugby were invited to be founder members of the Rugby Football Union (RFU) because they were already a well-established club. However, due to a mix-up, the team's representative missed the meeting and the team forfeited their right to be called founder members.
Since then, the Wasps Rugby team has been nomadic. Although the club was originally formed in London, they relocated to Coventry in 2014. Now, the side play all Wasps fixtures at the Ricoh Arena.
Prior to the Wasps Rugby team's move to Coventry, the side had already played at several homes. For example, from 1923 to 1996, they were based at Repton Avenue in Sudbury, and from 1996 to 2002, they played at Loftus Road in Shepherd's Bush. In addition, from 2002 to 2014 they played at Adams Park in High Wycombe, around 30 miles away from London.
Similarly, the side has also been known by a number of names. They're currently known simply as Wasps Rugby, but the Wasps Rugby team has also been known as Wasps FC, Wasps RFC and London Wasps over the years.
As the Wasps Rugby team has been so successful in the professional era, several international rugby stars have played for the club. For example, England legend Phil Vickery, Scotland wing Kenny Logan and Australian superstar Kurtley Beale have all played for the Wasps Rugby team.
